by Grandfather Clocks UK
Many of us remember these types of clocks from our grandparents’ homes, standing stately in the corner and commanding attention as you enter. Grandfather clocks have been around for hundreds of years and looking at their popularity today they will stay around for another couple of hundred years.
Grandfather clocks are also known as longcase clocks, tall-case clocks or floor clocks.
What sets these types of clocks apart from others are that they are freestanding and they work with a pendulum clock and their swinging pendulum inside the tower or the waist of the case makes them truly spectacular.
These types of clocks are between 1.8m and 2.4 m in length on average. The case many times contain elaborate carved details on the hood or bonnet (the part of the clock that surrounds the clock’s face). The English clockmaker, William Clement is credited with the development of this form in 1670. Most clocks of this design are striking clocks, meaning they sound on the hour, or even every quarter of an hour.
What makes grandfather clocks so special?
If you were one of those people that grew up with a clock like this in your home, chances are good that it may become a family heirloom. These types of clocks carry immense value, both physically and emotionally. With proper care and servicing, grandfather clocks can stay in families for generations, and, if they were produced by a well-known clockmaker, these clocks will only increase in value.
